Hyonic's HBA1 Additive

A breakthrough for lead-acid batteries

Hyonic has developed and patented HBA1, a technology designed to transform the commercial lead-acid battery market. With minimal cost and simple application, it delivers substantial improvements in performance, safety, and sustainability – adding measurable value for anyone who operates or depends on lead-acid batteries.

What is HBA1?

HBA1 is a clean, safe, and recyclable additive technology for lead-acid batteries. Easily applied in situ, it delivers instant and long-lasting gains in battery efficiency, durability, and safety – while also reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

For operators, this means higher reliability and lower running costs. For manufacturers, it represents a major step forward in sustainable battery technology.

How HBA1 works

At the heart of HBA1 is a chemistry that redefines how lead-acid batteries perform and age. It works by preventing plate degradation, retaining the lead oxide mass on the plates so they remain stable over time. By catalysing a cleaner, lower-loss reaction during every charge and discharge cycle, it reduces sulphation, one of the main causes of battery decline. At the same time, HBA1 dissolves hydrogen and oxygen back into the electrolyte, reabsorbing gases that would otherwise escape and cause both electrolyte loss and hazardous emissions. Finally, by stopping gas bubbles from blocking electrolyte contact with the plates, it lowers internal resistance, ensuring the battery maintains maximum efficiency throughout its life.

Solving three major challenges in battery health:

  1. Excess heat – Without treatment, gas bubbles cause plates to overheat and warp. HBA1 keeps temperatures below 54 °C during rapid charge, well within safe operating limits.
  2. Blocked reactions – Gas bubbles reduce the surface area available for reactions, cutting efficiency. HBA1 dissolves these bubbles instantly, maximising the active plate surface.
  3. Electrolyte loss – By returning gases to the electrolyte, HBA1 maintains fluid levels, minimising maintenance and prolonging service life.

Benefits of HBA1

HBA1 brings powerful advantages to both users and manufacturers of lead-acid batteries:

  • Lifespan extended – battery service life increased by up to 300%.
  • Performance restored – even aged units can be rejuvenated, with field trials showing recovery up to 105% of OEM capacity.
  • Lower charge temperatures – on average 12% cooler than untreated batteries.
  • Faster charging – reduced time to reach full capacity.
  • Lower energy use – significantly less power required to achieve a 100% charge.
  • Longer runtimes – operating time sustained at up to 105% of OEM levels.
  • Reduced costs – less energy used, fewer replacements needed, and charging costs proportionately reduced.
  • Less maintenance – servicing intervals extended by up to 300%.
  • Carbon savings – each treated cell reduces greenhouse gas emissions, preventing on average 350 kg of CO₂ over a 20-year lifetime.

Why it matters

For industries where lead-acid batteries remain essential – from data centres and telecoms to logistics, automotive, and defence – HBA1 is not just an additive. It is a step change in battery management, making existing assets safer, greener, and more efficient for decades to come.
